I recently started doing some research into automotive SEO today and came across a dealer website where there were literally hundreds of keywords stuffed into the content on the home page. As I went deeper into the site, I noticed that the Title tags and descriptions were all the same and there was no additional content anywhere on this site. It’s almost as if this dealer is not aware that Google indexes each page separately. Not to mention that keyword stuffing does not work and a single page will never rank for hundreds of keywords.
The key to good SEO is to treat each page as it’s own entity. Here is a quote from Google Webmaster Central “Googlebot processes each of the pages it crawls in order to compile a massive index of all the words it sees and their location on each page. In addition, we process information included in key content tags and attributes, such as Title tags and ALT attributes.”
It is very important to keep this in mind when you start the SEO process. The goal is to have one primary focus for each page, one concept that the page is about. As far as I am concerned, the optimum number of keywords to target per page is ONE. Yes, I said ONE. Now I know this is probably not possible for most people because to do this would require someone to have no life whatsoever or require them to spend an outrageous amount of money on a company to do this for them.
The next best thing is to take blocks of keywords, say 5 or 10 at the absolute most, that are consistent with the primary focus of your page and work from there. Understand that these keywords should be a mix of a single highly competitive money term with less competive long tails that will be supporting terms for the page. You will have a better shot at ranking for all of them using this method. Do a couple of pages each week and you will continue to expand your market, seeing your traffic increase week after week.
For those that don’t want to spend time doing SEO themselves, it might be best to contact a well respected firm that will use a solid methodology, focused on building new pages with good content each and every month.
